The Saxby Cast Iron Hopper Head No.1 is one of the most recognisable forms in the traditional rainwater catalogue — a wide-shouldered, multi-faceted body that narrows dramatically to a slender outlet, with the kind of confident silhouette you see on Victorian terraces, civic buildings, and well-detailed country houses across the UK.
The Saxby No.2 is cast with a flat back for wall mounting, with integral fixing holes, and offered in three pipe sizes: 65mm (2.5″), 75mm (3″), and 100mm (4″). At its largest — for 100mm pipe — the unit measures 355mm wide by 230mm deep and 240mm high, making it a substantial and visually authoritative component on larger drainage runs. The smaller 65mm and 75mm variants share the same 305mm width and 197mm depth, appropriate for secondary stacks, outbuildings, and properties where the downpipe run is lighter.
The multi-faceted tapering body is the defining characteristic of this hopper: it gives the No.2 depth and shadow without relying on applied ornament. On Victorian townhouses, listed commercial properties, and Gothic-influenced ecclesiastical buildings, this form reads as period-accurate and architecturally coherent.

LCC is traditional cast iron socket-and-spigot soil pipe made to BS 416-1:1990. Each length has a socket at one end and a spigot at the other, and joints are packed with caulking cord and finished with a jointing sealant. It is supplied with a black bitumen coating and is the like-for-like choice for external soil stacks on Victorian and Edwardian buildings. See the Traditional LCC range.
In most cases, replacing like-for-like cast iron guttering on a listed building does not require Listed Building Consent (LBC), provided the replacement matches the existing profile, material, and finish exactly. However, any change of material away from cast iron will almost always require consent. We recommend consulting your local conservation officer before proceeding, and we can provide specification documentation to support your application if required.
The right size depends on the width of your gutter run and the volume of water you need to collect. The Strayton H42A is available in four widths: 305mm (12"), 355mm (14"), 457mm (18"), and 610mm (24"). As a general guide, wider hoppers suit larger roof areas and heavier rainfall zones. Size selection depends on the distance between the mounting point and the rooflight frame, and the desired throw (opening distance). Our telescopic openers are available in 150mm, 250mm, and 300mm; the screw-jack stay is available in 300mm with a 250mm throw. Casting of iron is an imperfect processs. It is possible with some cast iron radiators that you will get minor imperfections in the surface finish. When radiators are painted this will reduce and over the years every additional coat of paint applied will provide a smoother more equal finish.
