The Shearwater No.522 is a wide, quiet casting with a sloping front face and an integral back plate — the most contemporary-looking pattern in the range, and useful precisely because of that.
The front slopes back from a broad open rim to a narrow base, meeting the flat sides in clean unbroken lines. There is no cornice, no moulding and no ornament. The back plate is cast as part of the head, so it beds directly onto the wall and needs no separate bracketing.
Restraint of this order suits two quite different briefs. On a sensitive conservation scheme where the instruction is to reduce visual clutter, a plain sloped head does its work without adding period flavour that was never there. On good modern architecture using traditional materials — a new build in a conservation area, a contemporary extension to a listed house — it reads as deliberate rather than as a piece of pastiche borrowed from a Victorian catalogue.
The smooth interior with no internal corners is also the easiest form in the range to clear, which matters where access is difficult.

The Ornamental Airbrick (OAB) is available in three sizes: 225mm × 75mm (2.8kg), 225mm × 150mm (4.1kg), and 225mm × 225mm (5.8kg). All sizes have a uniform depth of 75mm, making them consistent to install across a subfloor ventilation course.

Our cast iron hopper heads are available in a standard primed and black-painted finish, ready for on-site topcoats. Heritage colour finishes and factory-applied linseed oil paint are available on request. Linseed oil paint is a vapour-permeable, period-appropriate finish particularly well suited to listed buildings and conservation area properties.
The Antique Black finish is cast iron with a blackened surface — the most historically accurate finish for cast iron ironwork and the most appropriate for the majority of heritage applications. Polished Lacquered is cast iron with a bright polished surface sealed with clear lacquer, suited to interiors and sheltered locations where polished ironwork is the specification. Polished Brass is solid polished brass throughout — the correct choice where existing building fittings are in brass or where a warm metal tone is required.
