The Charton No.58 is a wide, shallow head with a sloping front and an integral back plate, drawn for positions where depth is limited and the fixing needs to be simple.
The front face slopes back from the open rim to a narrow base, the sides remain flat and plain, and the back plate is cast as part of the head so it beds directly against the wall. There is no cornice and no ornament. Everything about the casting is arranged to keep projection minimal while retaining useful capacity.
It earns its place in awkward positions: under a shallow eaves overhang, beneath a string course, on a rear elevation where a passage or a boundary wall runs close beneath, or on rubble masonry where a bracketed head would need packing to sit true.
It suits period domestic and estate buildings, agricultural and service ranges, and conservation schemes where the rainwater goods should be unobtrusive.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002, supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request.

Our cast iron airbricks are available in three standard sizes: 225mm × 75mm (single course), 225mm × 150mm (double course), and 225mm × 225mm (square format). These correspond to the standard airbrick positions used in Victorian and Edwardian brickwork. Each size is available across the School Board, Louvre, and Ornamental pattern ranges.

Our cast iron hopper heads are available in a standard primed and black-painted finish, ready for on-site topcoats. Heritage colour finishes and factory-applied linseed oil paint are available on request. Linseed oil paint is a vapour-permeable, period-appropriate finish particularly well suited to listed buildings and conservation area properties.
Hopper heads are supplied in red oxide primer ready for on-site painting, or pre-finished in black. A full range of Heritage Colours in traditional linseed oil paint is also available on request — please contact us for the swatch chart.

The Gothic foliate tracery design of the Ornamental Airbrick provides a good free-flow ventilation area relative to its face size. The open area is comparable to other standard cast iron airbrick patterns. The visual density of the pattern at a distance reads as solid ironwork, which suits formal and decorative elevations without compromising subfloor ventilation effectiveness.
Yes. Cast iron hopper heads are the historically correct choice for listed and period buildings, and a like-for-like cast iron replacement is generally accepted without objection by conservation officers. We manufacture to BS 460 for genuine heritage character and durability.
