The Westminster No.521 is a square-bodied head carrying a single cast rosette on its face beneath a firmly moulded cornice — one focal point, cleanly placed, on an otherwise disciplined casting.
The cornice projects to throw a horizontal shadow; the body tapers below it to the outlet, with a cast side boss taking the wall fixing. The rosette sits centrally on the front face, an open flower form with radiating petals, deep enough to read clearly from ground level without breaking the silhouette.
That single motif is the whole argument for the pattern. It gives the elevation something to look at close to, while keeping the outline simple at distance. Where a fully decorated head would overpower a modest front, and a plain box would look like a compromise on a good one, this pattern generally lands correctly.
It suits Victorian civic and institutional buildings, parish churches and chapels, vicarages, board schools and better-quality domestic work — anywhere the original ironwork carried a restrained decorative element.
