The York No.518 is a tall, richly decorated head for elevations that can carry ornament at high level.
The casting is upright rather than wide, with the face divided into panels each carrying a cast floral roundel — open flower forms with radiating petals, repeated across the body in a regular rhythm. Above, a moulded cornice caps the composition; below, the body draws in through a tapering skirt to the outlet. The repetition of the flower motif down the face is what gives the pattern its presence: it is legible from ground level in a way that finer, shallower ornament is not.
Height is the practical characteristic. A tall hopper offers more freeboard between the normal water line and the rim, which matters where a single head takes discharge from a large or steeply pitched roof area, or where a valley gutter delivers a sudden volume in heavy rain. On churches and chapels in particular, where roof areas are large and access for clearing is difficult, that additional depth is worth having.
It suits High Victorian domestic and ecclesiastical work, non-conformist chapels, board schools, and municipal buildings of the later nineteenth century — anywhere the original detailing was confident and a plain box would look impoverished.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002 and supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request.
