The Strayton Cast Iron Hopper Head No.42 — code H42A — is a large-format rectangular rainwater hopper with a strong horizontal profile and a clean, functional character. It belongs to the tradition of Victorian and Edwardian commercial and civic hoppers: wide, plain-bodied, and built to handle significant volumes of water from large roof areas.
The H42A presents as a broad, shallow-fronted rectangular box with flat panel sides and a projecting top rim. There is no applied decoration; the proportions and the quality of the casting carry it. In four widths — 305mm (12″), 355mm (14″), 457mm (18″), and 610mm (24″) — all at a consistent 184mm depth and 150mm height, the range covers the span from a terrace house downpipe to the substantial drainage runs of warehouses, civic buildings, and large country houses. The outlet sits centrally at the base.
The H42A is suited to Victorian and Edwardian terraced streets, converted industrial buildings, commercial heritage properties, and any project requiring a wide-format hopper without decorative elaboration. It reads quietly against plain brickwork and dressed stone alike, and its four size options make it practical across a wide range of gutter configurations.
Cast in solid cast iron and available in standard black paint finish or factory-applied linseed oil paint for conservation work, the H42A offers a broad range of pipe connection options including round, square, and rectangular outlets. Both finish and connection size are selected at the time of order.

The Polished Lacquered finish suits buildings where period ironwork was finished bright rather than painted — formal entrance elevations, listed properties, and settings where the grille contributes to the decorative programme of the facade. It is appropriate for conservation specifications and high-specification heritage new build.

The Antique Black cast iron version is suitable for external use. The Polished Lacquered version is best suited to interiors or sheltered external locations where the polished finish will be protected from weathering. The Polished Brass version is suited to interior and semi-exposed locations. For external applications on exposed elevations, the Antique Black finish is the recommended specification.

Tuscan Foundry's cast iron hopper heads are available in Standard Black and Heritage Colour finishes. A linseed oil paint finish is also offered — a sustainable, vapour-permeable option particularly appropriate for listed buildings and conservation projects. The Ornamental Airbrick is most appropriate on Victorian Gothic buildings — churches, chapels, vicarages, almshouses, collegiate buildings, and high-specification estate architecture — where decorative ironwork was part of the original design. It suits listed building replacements in kind and heritage new build where period accuracy in detailing is expected.
The H1 is available to accept round pipe connections in 65mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 150mm diameters. The 65mm and 75mm variants measure 305mm wide by 197mm deep and 210mm high.
