The Archant No.516 is the most unusual casting in the range and, on the right building, the most rewarding. It is not shaped like a hopper at all. It is shaped like a length of balustrade.
A moulded plinth runs the full width of the casting, with a matching cornice above. Between them sits an open arcade of turned balusters, cast in the round and genuinely pierced, so daylight passes through. The arcade is flanked at each end by a square panel carrying a rosette — a paterae roundel of the kind found in classical friezes — and the whole composition is terminated by a ball finial at either end.
The effect is that the rainwater head reads as a fragment of parapet balustrade that happens to collect water. On a building with an actual balustraded parapet, a pedimented centrepiece, or classical detailing at high level, it resolves a problem that usually has no good answer: how to place a hopper on a principal elevation without it looking like an afterthought bolted to the architecture.
This is a pattern for significant buildings — country houses, civic and institutional work, orangeries and garden buildings, and high-quality new construction in a classical idiom. It is emphatically not a pattern for a modest elevation, where its width and its ornament would overwhelm everything around it.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002 and supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request. The pierced balusters reward a finish applied with care; we are happy to advise on preparation and coating.

Our cast iron hopper heads are available in a standard primed and black-painted finish, ready for on-site topcoats. Heritage colour finishes and factory-applied linseed oil paint are available on request. Linseed oil paint is a vapour-permeable, period-appropriate finish particularly well suited to listed buildings and conservation area properties.
Linseed oil paint is the most appropriate finish for cast iron guttering on listed and historic buildings. It is breathable, flexible, and penetrating — qualities that suit the movement characteristics of cast iron through seasonal temperature changes. Tuscan Foundry Products offers a curated range of heritage linseed oil colours. For modern applications, a high-quality exterior oil-based paint system over a metal primer is also acceptable.

With National Maintenance week fast approaching (18th – 25th November 2011), Tuscan Foundry Products Ltd have decided to help period property owners look after rainwater systems by offering big discounts on selected cast iron gutters, pipes and fittings.
Friday 25th November is designated as National Gutters Day and on this particular day, homeowners are encouraged to check their systems for evidence of damage. Repairing sections of damaged cast iron gutter and pipe can help avoid potentially thousands of pounds of damage to brickwork.
Tuscan is offering these savings across a range of profiles and includes both primer and painted stock. The offers will only be available whilst stocks last so visit our website to view our discounted cast iron rainwater goods today.
For more information concerning National Maintenance Week visit the Society for the Protect of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) at www.maintainyourbuilding.org.uk
Our cast iron hopper heads are available with 65mm, 75mm and 100mm round outlets, 75mm, 100mm and 125mm square outlets, and 100x75mm, 125x100mm and 150x125mm rectangular outlets, to match the downpipe already on site or specified for the project.
A hit and miss vent has a sliding plate on the back of the grille that can be opened, partially restricted, or closed entirely without removing the vent from the wall. This allows airflow to be controlled from inside the building, making it suitable for underfloor void ventilation and through-wall ventilation where adjustable airflow is needed.
