When resin repair is the right answer

Fix the cause first. Timber decays because it is wet, and repairing a beam end without resolving the leaking gutter, failed flashing or trapped moisture that caused the decay simply relocates the problem to the next section of timber.

Use it to keep fabric, not to avoid carpentry. Conservation practice generally prefers traditional scarf and splice repairs in matching timber, which are reversible and inspectable. Resin earns its place where a traditional repair would mean removing significantly more historic material, or where access makes it impractical.

Respect the moisture requirements. Resin systems have specific limits on the moisture content of the substrate and on temperature during curing, and failures are usually traceable to ignoring them. Encapsulating damp timber in resin is a reliable way to make decay worse and invisible.

Expect it to be permanent. These repairs cannot readily be undone, and they change how a member behaves. On highly graded buildings that argues for caution, a structural engineer's involvement, and a clear record of what was done and where.

Is resin repair acceptable on a listed building?

It can be, where it retains historic fabric that would otherwise be cut out, and it is used in conservation work for exactly that reason. It is effectively irreversible, so consent applications usually need to justify it against a traditional timber repair.

Is a resin repair as strong as replacing the timber?

Properly designed systems using bonded reinforcement can restore or exceed the original capacity, but that depends on the design, the condition of the surrounding timber and correct installation. On structural members this is an engineer's calculation, not a product claim.

Will resin trap moisture in the timber?

It can, which is why substrate moisture content limits matter and why the source of water must be dealt with first. Repairs carried out on damp timber, or without addressing the leak, commonly fail out of sight.
