Cast iron rectangular downpipes are used on Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian buildings where a rectangular — rather than round or square — cross-section pipe was the original specification. The rectangular profile has a lower visual impact on the building elevation than a square or round pipe of equivalent capacity: the narrow dimension sits close to the wall face whilst the wider dimension takes the pipe face, giving a flatter, more recessed appearance. On formal terraces, civic buildings, institutional architecture, and larger period properties, the rectangular pipe delivers the required drainage capacity with minimal disruption to the facade.
The Rectangular Pipe Plain is the plain-ended cast iron rectangular downpipe section, without integral ears. The plain pipe connects within a run using holderbats, build-in brackets, or strap fixings secured independently to the wall, allowing the bracket type and fixing position to be chosen freely without reference to the pipe joint location. The plain end also allows the pipe to be cut to length more readily.
