The Barrow No.540 is the plainest square head we cast: a simple box, straight-sided, with no cornice, no panelling and no decoration of any kind.
The casting is close to a cube in proportion, with flat faces meeting at square corners and the outlet dropping directly from the underside. Its virtue is capacity for footprint — very little projection from the wall face, and no moulding to catch debris or complicate a repaint.
Plainness of this order is a deliberate specification, not a compromise. On agricultural and industrial buildings — barns, maltings, engine houses, granaries — the original rainwater goods were always utilitarian, and a decorated head would be historically wrong. On mixed schemes it serves the returns and service elevations while a modelled pattern takes the front. On tight urban sites it clears boundaries and pavements that a projecting cornice would foul.
The iron and the standard are the same as the most ornate pattern in the range, as is the expected service life.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002, supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request.

Yes — we strongly recommend painting all products before installation to ensure full coverage on every surface, which reduces long-term maintenance. Standard Premier Rainwater products are supplied in a grey metal primer with rust inhibitors and need two undercoats and one top coat (or one undercoat and two top coats) of a good quality exterior paint.

The H542A measures 240mm wide x 240mm deep x 290mm high, making it well suited to a compact square profile suited to smaller Georgian and Victorian properties, extensions and outbuildings.

The Polished Lacquered finish suits buildings where period ironwork was finished bright rather than painted — formal entrance elevations, listed properties, and settings where the grille contributes to the decorative programme of the facade. It is appropriate for conservation specifications and high-specification heritage new build.
The louvre face provides directional airflow and offers some resistance to driven rain entering the subfloor void, making it a practical choice for exposed elevations or properties in areas with significant prevailing wind and rainfall. The square-grid (school board) pattern offers a larger open ventilation area but less weather protection.
Hopper heads are supplied in red oxide primer ready for on-site painting, or pre-finished in black. A full range of Heritage Colours in traditional linseed oil paint is also available on request — please contact us for the swatch chart.
