The Ashwell No.532 is a wide, low head with canted ends and very little ornament — the quiet member of the group, and the one that solves awkward geometry.
The body is a broad, shallow box with the ends cut back on the splay. Simple raised mouldings run along the top and bottom edges, framing an otherwise plain face. The outlet drops from the underside. That is the whole design, and its usefulness lies in the proportions rather than the detail.
Width without height is what the pattern offers. Where a string course, a band course, a shallow eaves overhang or a low parapet leaves only a limited vertical zone for the hopper, a tall head simply will not fit without cutting across a moulding. The Ashwell spreads the same collecting area sideways and stays within the available band. The canted ends soften what would otherwise be a hard rectangular block against the wall, and reduce the visual weight at the point where the casting meets the elevation.
It suits later Georgian and early Victorian elevations, terraces with strong horizontal banding, estate and agricultural buildings, and any scheme where the rainwater goods should be competent and unobtrusive rather than decorative.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002 and supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request.

Yes. Cast iron rainwater goods are widely accepted by conservation officers and historic environment bodies as the appropriate material for listed buildings. Tuscan Foundry's hopper heads are manufactured in solid cast iron to BS 460 specification and are suitable for use on all listed building classes. A linseed oil paint finish is also available, which is particularly appropriate for conservation projects.
