The Alnwick No.528 carries a crenellated rim — a run of cast battlements around the top of the head, alternating merlon and embrasure exactly as they would appear on a parapet.
Below the crenellation the body is canted, its corners cut back to a faceted plan, and falls away through a smooth taper to the outlet. The contrast is deliberate: an emphatic, broken top line above a plain, quiet body. From ground level the battlements read clearly against the sky or the wall behind, which is the whole purpose of putting ornament at high level.
Castellated rainwater goods belong to a specific and well-documented tradition. They appear on Gothic Revival churches and chapels, on Victorian board schools and municipal buildings, on estate lodges and gatehouses, and on the castellated country houses of the earlier nineteenth century — buildings whose parapets, towers and porches already use the same motif. Used on such a building the hopper joins the architecture. Used on a plain Georgian front it looks like fancy dress.
The canted body serves the same purpose here as elsewhere in the range: it stiffens the casting and reduces the flat internal corners where debris settles, which is worth having on a head that will be cleared infrequently.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002 and supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request.

These correspond to the standard airbrick positions used in Victorian and Edwardian brickwork. Each size is available across the School Board, Louvre, and Ornamental pattern ranges.
Victorian properties most commonly used Ogee (OG) gutter profiles, including the standard Cast Iron Ogee and the G46 Moulded Ogee. Half Round guttering was also widely used, particularly in the later Victorian period. The correct profile depends on what is already present on the building — we recommend inspecting any surviving sections and matching the profile, size, and socket direction exactly. We supply 19 standard gutter profiles and can copy-cast any non-standard profile from a drawing, photograph, or physical sample.
Polished chrome has a bright mirror finish, while satin chrome has a brushed, low-sheen appearance. Both are available in the telescopic hand winder range. The finish choice typically depends on the ironmongery specification for the project.

The Cast Iron Louvre Airbrick suits Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, semi-detached properties, public houses, agricultural buildings, and workshop structures where the original airbrick was a louvre-face grille. The horizontal fin profile is widely found in British domestic and light industrial construction from the 1870s through to the 1950s.
