The Stratham No.513 solves a problem that comes up constantly on historic buildings and has very few good answers: what to do where a rainwater head has to sit in an internal angle.
The casting is an open square box with a boldly moulded, outward-flaring rim. Beneath it the body is deeply corbelled — a series of stepped mouldings that sweep inward and downward to the outlet, giving the underside real sculptural depth. Because the form is symmetrical about its diagonal, it sits correctly in a re-entrant corner where a conventional flat-backed hopper would leave an awkward gap or require packing out.
Internal angles are where rainwater problems concentrate on historic fabric. Two roof slopes discharge into one place, the wall is often in permanent shade, and any overflow runs directly into a junction that is difficult to inspect and expensive to repair. A hopper of adequate capacity, properly detailed for the angle, is worth far more than its cost.
The stepped underside is not only decorative. It carries the visual weight of the casting down to the pipe, so the head does not appear to float, and it gives the corbelling enough projection to throw water clear of the wall face.
Cast in solid iron to BS 460:2002 and supplied in primer or black as standard, with heritage colours and traditional linseed oil finishes available on request.
