The metal pipe bobbin is a spacer used with a pipe nail to fix eared cast iron downpipe, holding the pipe ears clear of the wall.
The bobbin sits between each fixing ear and the masonry. The gap it creates lets the back of the pipe be painted and maintained, keeps the pipe off damp masonry, and stops water running down the wall from tracking behind the pipe. Metal bobbins are a durable alternative to the traditional wooden pattern and will not rot or split.
Use one bobbin per fixing ear, with a pipe nail of suitable length, on eared round, square and rectangular downpipe.

Victorian properties most commonly used Ogee (OG) gutter profiles, including the standard Cast Iron Ogee and the G46 Moulded Ogee. Half Round guttering was also widely used, particularly in the later Victorian period. The correct profile depends on what is already present on the building — we recommend inspecting any surviving sections and matching the profile, size, and socket direction exactly. We supply 19 standard gutter profiles and can copy-cast any non-standard profile from a drawing, photograph, or physical sample.
This opener is particularly well suited to period and heritage properties — Georgian and Victorian terraces, conservation area houses, traditional orangeries, and listed buildings where a brass finish is required to complement existing ironmongery. It is compatible with Lumen Rooflights and most timber-framed skylights.
Hopper heads are supplied in red oxide primer ready for on-site painting, or pre-finished in black. A full range of Heritage Colours in traditional linseed oil paint is also available on request — please contact us for the swatch chart.
Yes. Decorative cast iron and brass ventilation grilles of this pattern were widely used in Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and like-for-like replacements are generally accepted by conservation officers for listed building works. We can provide product specifications and material details to support listed building consent applications if required.
