We are refurbishing our bathroom and wish to place a heated towel rail in the new bathroom. Our plumber has advised that the heated towel warmer would be connected to the heating system, this would mean when we turn the system off in the summer that the towel rail will not work. What can we do ?

It is possible for us to supply towel warmers with an electric heating element in them. The Electrad system is a unique system available to us, that enables independent heating of towel rails and radiators via the properties electrical system.

We have just purchased some cast iron radiators and they have a slightly uneven texture to the surface. What can we do about this.

Casting of iron is an imperfect processs. It is possible with some cast iron radiators that you will get minor imperfections in the surface finish. When radiators are painted this will reduce and over the years every additional coat of paint applied will provide a smoother more equal finish.

We are looking to install a new heating system into a Georgian farmhouse and would like to know whether we would be better installing tubular steel column radiators or traditional cast iron radiators.

Cast iron radiators cost no more to run than modern steel or aluminium radiators. Cast iron is a very efficient material at emitting heat, thus you have items like le creuset cast iron pans. Cast iron holds it’s heat extremly well, which means that the radiators stay warm for longer.

What finishes are available on your cast iron hopper heads?

Our cast iron hopper heads are available in a standard primed and black-painted finish, ready for on-site topcoats. Heritage colour finishes and factory-applied linseed oil paint are available on request. Linseed oil paint is a vapour-permeable, period-appropriate finish particularly well suited to listed buildings and conservation area properties.

We are renovating a barn and would like to know what the anticipated life expectancy of your guttering and pipework would be.

The standards for our cast iron gutters and pipes have remained remarkably constant for many years. The physical properties of cast iron are sustained throughout its lifetime thus maintaining its effectiveness. Coupled with is durability and proper maintenance, we would expect our traditional cast iron rainwater products to last for over 50 years under normal conditions.

Please can you advise whether we will require 1/2″ or 3/4″ BSP connections for our new cast iron radiator.

All of our cast iron radiators are availbale as standard with a 1/2″ BSP (15mm) connection. We are though also able to supply many of our radiators and valves with 3/4″ BSP connections. Due to the size proportions of some radiators and valves 3/4″ connections may be more suitable.

What building types is the H534 cast iron hopper head suited to?

The H534 measures 430mm wide x 240mm deep x 366mm high, making it well suited to Victorian villas and townhouses.

What finishes are available on cast iron hopper heads?

Tuscan Foundry's cast iron hopper heads are available in Standard Black and Heritage Colour finishes. A linseed oil paint finish is also offered — a sustainable, vapour-permeable option particularly appropriate for listed buildings and conservation projects. Heritage colour swatches are available from the team on request.

Do I need to paint standard cast iron gutters before installation?

Yes — we strongly recommend painting all products before installation to ensure full coverage on every surface, which reduces long-term maintenance. Standard Premier Rainwater products are supplied in a grey metal primer with rust inhibitors and need two undercoats and one top coat (or one undercoat and two top coats) of a good quality exterior paint.

What finishes are available on your cast iron hopper heads?

Hopper heads are supplied in red oxide primer ready for on-site painting, or pre-finished in black. A full range of Heritage Colours in traditional linseed oil paint is also available on request — please contact us for the swatch chart.
