The steel holdfast is the traditional fixing for plain cast iron round downpipe: a spike driven or built into a mortar joint, with a collar that holds the pipe clear of the wall.
Fix a holdfast below the socket of each length so the joint is supported. Because the spike goes into the mortar rather than the face of the brick or stone, it avoids drilling historic masonry, and it can often reuse existing holdfast positions. Holding the pipe off the wall lets the back be painted and keeps it away from damp masonry.
Specify holdfasts for plain pipe runs on stone and brick buildings, particularly where historic holdfasts survive and the brief is like-for-like replacement. Use at least one per length, with additional holdfasts at offsets and on tall runs.
Sizes: 65mm (2½″), 75mm (3″) and 100mm (4″) diameter.
Made from steel and supplied primed or black painted, to match the finish of the pipework.
Suitable for listed buildings and conservation area work. For specification advice, a full schedule or a quotation, call 0333 987 4452 or use the contact form.

We do offer a range of Ogee patterned gutters in both straight and radius profiles. The straight profiles are much more common and as such cost less.
Traditional Express can be painted, including in our linseed oil finish. LCC is supplied with a black bitumen coating, which cannot be reliably overpainted with conventional paints; maintain it with a compatible bituminous paint. Where a painted soil stack is required, specify Traditional Express.

Yes. Cast iron is the material required by most conservation officers and listed building consents for the replacement or replication of traditional rainwater goods. Our hopper heads are produced in solid cast iron and we can assist with specification notes or material statements for planning purposes if required.
The H544 measures 380mm wide x 220mm deep x 418mm high, making it well suited to Georgian and Victorian townhouses and period commercial buildings.
In most cases, replacing like-for-like cast iron guttering on a listed building does not require Listed Building Consent (LBC), provided the replacement matches the existing profile, material, and finish exactly. However, any change of material away from cast iron will almost always require consent. We recommend consulting your local conservation officer before proceeding, and we can provide specification documentation to support your application if required.
The Ornamental Airbrick is most appropriate on Victorian Gothic buildings — churches, chapels, vicarages, almshouses, collegiate buildings, and high-specification estate architecture — where decorative ironwork was part of the original design. It suits listed building replacements in kind and heritage new build where period accuracy in detailing is expected.
Hopper heads are supplied in red oxide primer ready for on-site painting, or pre-finished in black. A full range of Heritage Colours in traditional linseed oil paint is also available on request — please contact us for the swatch chart.
The Strayton H42A accepts round, square, and rectangular pipe connections. Round: 65mm, 75mm, and 100mm. Square: 75×75mm, 100×100mm, and 125×125mm. Rectangular: 100×75mm, 125×100mm, and 150×100mm. Please specify your required connection size when ordering.
