Collyweston Stone Slate Mine (Claude N Smith Ltd)
Collyweston Stone Slate Mine is run as a subsidiary of Claude N Smith Ltd, a long-established Collyweston slate roofing business with family roots in the trade. The company reopened the mine at Collyweston in 2016 and describes it as the only working Collyweston stone slate mine, producing around 1,000 square metres of slate a year from material extracted and split on site. It supplies new Collyweston slate locally and further afield, and offers advice on stone slate roofing requirements. Buildings named in connection with its slate include King’s, Clare and Christ’s Colleges in Cambridge, among them Bodley Court at King’s, as well as The Hind Hotel in Wellingborough and Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island, New York. Visits are by appointment on weekdays. The business states it is a member of the NFRC and CraftRoofer.
