The British Geological Survey is the national geological survey, an independent research organisation providing objective geoscientific data, information and knowledge. It cares for more than 400 datasets, including environmental monitoring data, digital databases and physical collections of borehole core, rocks, minerals and fossils, and publishes geological map data, 3D models and free resources through its OpenGeoscience service. Its Building Stones Team works to help preserve the stone-built heritage of the UK, supporting the identification and sourcing of building stone. The survey’s Scottish office is at the Lyell Centre in Edinburgh.
