Cast iron hopper heads — also known as rainwater heads or leader heads — are among the most distinctive and characterful elements of a traditional rainwater system. They mark the point where one or more gutter outlets discharge into a downpipe, and on period buildings they are frequently the most architecturally expressive component of the entire rainwater system.

Function and Form

A hopper head receives water from the gutter outlet above and channels it into the downpipe below. On buildings with multiple gutters discharging at the same point, or where the gutter outlet and downpipe do not align directly, the hopper provides the necessary junction. Beyond this practical function, hopper heads on historic buildings are often highly decorative — cast with date panels, monograms, coats of arms, heraldic motifs, or simply with elegant proportions that reflect the architectural character of the building.

The presence of a decorative hopper head is frequently an indicator of the building’s age. Many surviving cast iron hoppers date from the Georgian and Victorian periods, and the pattern of decoration often reflects the style of the building — restrained on Georgian elevations, more ornate on Victorian and Edwardian properties.

Our Range

Tuscan Foundry supplies over 50 cast iron hopper head patterns — one of the largest ranges available in the UK. Sizes range from modest domestic heads to large-scale hoppers for churches, civic buildings, and estate properties. All are available in standard black finish, heritage colours, and linseed oil paint finish.

Hopper heads are supplied to accept round, square, or rectangular downpipe connections in standard sizes. Where a non-standard connection is required, or where the hopper needs multiple outlets, our bespoke casting service can accommodate this.

Bespoke and Copy-Cast Hopper Heads

Where the existing hopper head carries a specific decorative detail — a date, initials, or an architectural motif — that cannot be matched from our standard range, we offer a bespoke copy-casting service. Working from detailed photographs, drawings, or a physical sample, our pattern makers produce an accurate reproduction that matches the original in form, scale, and detail.

Bespoke hopper heads are non-returnable and carry an 8–10 week lead time from order confirmation. We strongly recommend supplying as much reference material as possible at the enquiry stage to ensure an accurate result.

Specification for Listed Buildings

Cast iron hopper heads are consistently specified for listed building and conservation area projects where the existing system includes these components. Conservation officers will routinely require like-for-like replacement in the original material — cast iron — and will not approve substitution with GRP or plastic alternatives on a listed elevation.

All Tuscan Foundry hopper heads are cast iron, manufactured to BS 460:2002, and appropriate for listed building consent applications.
