Poor gutter alignment or sagging is a significant cause of inadequately functioning rainwater systems; this, in turn, can result in the overflow of rainwater, the formation of damp spots, and possible structural damage to the building.
Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the brackets supporting and retaining the gutters are symmetrical and robust enough to keep the gutter, which is frequently quite weighty when made of cast iron!
Many less expensive off-the-shelf brackets are made in foreign countries with inferior materials that do not provide sufficient strength. They are inadequately finished, reducing their durability, and will not offer the same durability and safety as British-made brackets.
Due to the weight of cast iron Apex cast iron guttering and the increased rainfall, we are beginning to experience due to climate change, we must plan to ensure that our gutters can withstand falling leaves, heavy rainfall, and high winds.
The brackets must be robust enough and have the correct profile for the guttering to be installed straight; otherwise, the guttering will twist and become ineffective at keeping water away from the building’s foundations.
In the past, every village or municipality had a blacksmith who made horseshoes (this is how our business began in 1893) and architectural fittings for the surrounding properties. As most period properties have a cast iron rainwater system, we advise replacing any brackets that are beyond repair with reproduction brackets that match the existing profile and last for decades.
When replacement brackets are used, they must be sturdy enough to support cast iron gutters; a rise and fall bracket manufactured in the United Kingdom with a more substantial cup and sturdier thread will provide a more robust solution.
It is essential to choose the correct bracket for the job, which is especially crucial for an effective rainwater system. Make sure the brackets you use are made of heavy-duty steel and have a zinc or galvanised finish.

Apex Heritage Cast Iron Gutter – Fascia Rise and Fall Gutter Bracket
Where the building has an existing fascia, this will help with the irregularity of levels, but again, putting up a new fascia would not necessarily look in keeping with a period property.
Fascia Rise and Fall Brackets
We can supply fascia brackets that take the gutter where no adjustment is required, along with cast iron gutters’ fascia rise and fall brackets, shown here.

Apex Heritage Top Rafter Rise and Fall Brackets
Available for Apex Heritage: HG/BG/OG/MG Cast Iron Gutter
A gutter rise and fall bracket with a thick (M10) thread are also particularly useful where old buildings have suffered from the settlement, causing irregularity in the levels of the rafters, which can cause problems when fitting or repairing the gutter. The benefit of a rise and fall bracket is that it can be adjusted according to the rise and fall of the gutter.
Bespoke Apex Heritage Gutter Brackets and Regional Style Gutter Brackets
Many regions have an architectural or regional style of bracket, which may be apparent in the architecture according to the climate, as in the North of Scotland where Rhone brackets (top rafter brackets) are used. The increased strength of top fixing (rhone) rafter brackets is beneficial for the increased weight of snow and wind loadings.
These are just some examples of the bespoke bracket profiles that Tuscan Foundry can manufacture here in the UK. In addition, we can manufacture brackets to match your existing brackets, enabling your building to maintain its unique character. Brackets for gutters with unique profiles are still made available and can be produced in bespoke designs.
