Cast iron square downpipes are the historically correct choice for Georgian and Regency buildings, and for any period property where a square section pipe was the original specification. The square profile has a more formal, rectilinear character than round downpipes — it was particularly fashionable from the late 18th century through the Regency period and remained in use on civic and institutional buildings well into the Victorian era. On stucco-fronted terraces, Regency villas, and formal town houses, the square pipe sits flush against the facade with a precision that round pipes cannot replicate.
The Square Pipe Plain is the plain-ended cast iron square downpipe section, without integral ears. The plain pipe connects within a run using pipe clips or strap brackets fixed to the wall, allowing the bracket type and fixing position to be determined independently of the pipe joint. The plain end also allows the pipe to be cut to length more easily than eared sections.
